Ian Blyth – It's Just a Thought

My thoughts and opinions

Who should be a politician?

Posted by Ian Blyth on 5 February 2007

Stumling and Mumbling has a great post of politians right to rule us at http://stumblingandmumbling.typepad.com/stumbling_and_mumbling/2007/02/missing_the_poi.html

My favourite paragraph is “Instead, we should judge politicians by virtue, not rules. We should ask: are they people of great soul, worthy to represent our nation and to be entrusted with big decisions?”

I remember seeing a program on a nomadic tribe recently. They did not have a leader but instead they had  a spokesman who was picked to speak for the tribe if needed. And that person was picked for their skill. At the moment we have politicians who are picked because they seem like the best choice compared to who else is standing. And that is the problem. We only gety politicians from people who want to stand for elections and not people that might be good at the job when they do get elected.

Why can’t politicians be more like football players? If we need some good tax politicians why can’t we do a transfer from another country where they have proved their credentials. Why do British politicians have to be British? Get the best people for the job.
